Sir:
We do not ask an honorary degree. You confer those on lives already spent in public teaching of first principles, or in friendship to your College. That is your gift, not our grade.
We send, as a gift of scholarship, a short octavo written in the register you teach: the Declaration as end and the Constitution as form; Euclid as demonstration; Witherspoon’s moral philosophy as the capstone of a BA; the compact North Carolina withheld until a Bill of Rights moved. The lectures on your online campus are yours. We have cited them, not copied them. The original labor in this binding is the Piedmont fact, the Euclidean reading of consent, the Lincoln method of copy and recitation, and the arms cases after Bruen as applications of “the people.”
If the book is of use to a student of yours, it has done its work. If it is not, it still had to be written. We remain, with respect for the College that put Euclid and the Federalist back in front of the country,
